Unfortunately, stories like Benito’s happen all too often. A dog gets adopted with high hopes, only to be returned shortly after. This often occurs when people expect a new dog to seamlessly adapt to their home without much effort, but that’s not how it works.
Every dog has its own unique personality, and as owners and handlers, it’s our responsibility to help them feel secure and comfortable in their new environment. The key to success is structure, something many people overlook when bringing a dog into their home.
Start slow and take the time to build a relationship with your new dog. Be patient, observe their quirks, and seek guidance from a local trainer who can help you address challenges along the way. A little effort goes a long way.

Benito came to PCAS extremely timid, and couldn’t complete a walk without nervously pancaking to the ground. Benito can be slow to warm up to strangers, but once he knows you he gets so excited to see you! Slowly with the help of some very special volunteers, Benito has been learning to trust and now gets excited to go on adventures (although he does needs encouragement to get into the car). Hiking has especially helped Benito come out of his shell, and he has been flourishing being out in serene and peaceful environments. Once he’s comfortable, Benny Boy loves to run agility equipment, play fetch, and make new canine friends.
Rehoming Needs: Benito would do best in a calm patient home where he can slowly be introduced and desensitized to new things. He will need to continue confidence building and would benefit from consistent exercise.
